"Indeed, the rage of theorists to make constitutions a vehicle for the conveyance of their own crude, and visionary aphorisms of government, requires to be guarded against with the most unceasing vigilance."
     -- Joseph Story
Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States
     Book III, § 1857.

Belgium is being obnoxious. Not that that's anything new.

The United States has some doctrinal repudiation to do. We brought this mess about ourselves when we went after Noriega: Rather than forthrightly taking up arms against Panama, we tarted up the United States Military as glorified process servers. The lesson was not lost on Europe, where they've never seen an obviously wrong idea they didn't like, in keeping with the Continental hobby of pushing any and all pernicious absurdities to their final destructive conclusions.
